Nick Bosa was never going to hit the practice field with his teammates, but the plan was always to have him around for these two weeks — the last week of OTAs and next week's three-day minicamp.
"Yeah, I mean, he can't take part in much because he's still rehabbing too," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters this afternoon, "but he's been here all week, and yeah, he's been good. But he came for a shorter visit than expected."
That's because Shanahan canceled the remainder of the offseason program after serious injuries to two players — offensive lineman Justin Skule and safety Tarvarius Moore. That eliminated the final two practices of OTAs and the minicamp, cutting short Bosa's trip to the West Coast.
"He thought he was going to come for two weeks, but I didn't let him know until I let the whole team know we weren't doing minicamp," Shanahan added.
Bosa was looking forward to building on his NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign but missed most of last season after suffering a torn ACL during Week 2. He recorded just six tackles, a quarterback hit, and a forced fumble in his two games in 2020.
49ers players return to the practice field on July 31, four days after they report to training camp. Shanahan had previously said that Bosa is on track to participate in those practices.
"He's going to show up at some time during this, but he won't be going out there (on the practice field), doing anything coming off the ACL," Shanahan said in May. "But we fully expect him to be ready for training camp."
