Before practice, the 49ers announced that injured cornerback Tim Harris (groin) and tight end Josh Pederson were waived. The team signed tight end Joshua Perkins and cornerback B.W. Webb to take their roster spots.
Did not practice:
- LB Azeez Al-Shaair (leg)
- DE Nick Bosa (maintenance day)
- DE Samson Ebukam (leg)
- CB Dontae Johnson (foot)
- TE MyCole Pruitt (calf)
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel returned to practice after dealing with what Shanahan labeled as "groin tightness" and mostly working on a side field on Tuesday.
Defensive end Samson Ebukam got the day off after experiencing some soreness. He missed Monday's practice with the same issue but participated on Tuesday.
QB watch
It was another strong day for rookie Trey Lance. Matt Barrows had the quarterback going 7-of-8 during team drills and tossing touchdowns in all four of his red-zone snaps. (The Athletic) Tight end Jordan Matthews, running back Wayne Gallman, and wide receiver Nsimba Webster hauled in touchdowns from Lance. The quarterback ran for another on an option to his left. (KNBR)
Lance also tossed deep passes to tight ends George Kittle and Ross Dwelley during team drills. The rookie's lone incompletion came on a throw to Kittle, who rookie safety Talanoa Hufanga tightly covered. (Sacramento Bee)
"He's putting on a show," Grant Cohn said of Lance. (SI)
While Lance has worked exclusively with the second-team unit — save one rep with the ones on Tuesday — the coaches have tried to mix in starters for the rookie to target; thus the pass attempts to Kittle. (Bay Area News Group) Lance also had three runs during today's work. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Starter Jimmy Garoppolo was 6-of-11 passing and scored a touchdown in one of his four red-zone plays. (Sacramento Bee) Cam Inman notes that, contrary to general manager John Lynch's comments to Adam Schefter, Garoppolo has not looked at his best. Still, the veteran looks like a quarterback in better command of a complex offense. He appeared to be enjoying himself when "not throwing the occasional stinker pass." (Bay Area News Group)
Josh Rosen finished 1-of-3 passing while Nate Sudfeld completed his only pass during team drills. (The Athletic)
Other notes
49ers coaches and staff wore T-shirts during practice honoring the team's general manager and soon-to-be Hall of Famer, John Lynch. Lynch will be inducted in Canton, Ohio, with the rest of the Class of 2021 on Sunday.
"This was a practice surprise," offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said after practice. "Actually, there was a couple of guys that were really excited to put it on in the office before we went out. And I kind of was scurrying around offices, like hiding it, so he didn't see it. The first thing I saw when I saw him, I asked him, 'Where's your shirt?' Because we thought it'd be kind of funny for him to wear his own name on his back.
"John is an unbelievable human being, and there's not too many Hall of Famers that you even have the chance to know. I think all the players and coaches alike really feel that way. I think he felt just tremendous gratitude and a little bashful. He's not a look-at-me guy, and there's a lot of people wearing his name today."
Colton McKivitz got some work at right guard with the first-team offense. Daniel Brunskill and Tom Compton had worked at that spot in previous practices. "It's obviously [a job] the 49ers would love Aaron Banks to grab sooner rather than later, given where they drafted him," wrote David Lombardi. (The Athletic)
In addition to his touchdown reception in red-zone drills, Matthews also had a key block on Gallman's touchdown from Lance. A stronger outing for the wide receiver turned tight end. (KNBR)
Newly signed cornerback B.W. Webb gave up a couple of completions in his debut practice with the 49ers. (Bay Area News Group)
Harris being off the roster, Dontae Johnson still being sidelined, and Emmanuel Moseley being on the reserve/COVID-19 list has opened up opportunities for rookie cornerbacks Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir.
"They're getting a lot of reps," defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said. "For those guys, it's just a matter of keep emphasizing and honing in on working their technique and fundamentals every day."
Safety Tavon Wilson has impressed while filling in for Jaquiski Tartt, also on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The veteran defender garnered praise from both Ryans and Kittle for his efforts so far. Wilson nearly hauled in an interception off a Garoppolo-thrown football today. (Bay Area News Group)
"I think having Tavon in, Tavon has done a really good job," Ryans said. "I mean, you can tell he's a true pro. He's a leader. I love his approach to every day. He attacks every day the right way, does a really awesome job of communicating out there with the guys, making sure guys are all on the same page. And he's just been great in there. So I'm happy that we were able to get Tavon, a really great addition to our team, and I like the way he's working."
Kittle finished the day with three catches during team drills after recording a total of just four entering the practice. That includes the reception from Lance and an eight-yard reception from Garoppolo during red-zone drills. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Defensive lineman Arik Armstead "blew up" a run on the opening series of team drills and then got around tackle Mike McGlinchey to pressure Garoppolo. Cornerback Ken Webster broke up a Garoppolo pass intended for Samuel. Linebacker Fred Warner stopped rookie running back Trey Sermon just shy of the end zone on a play that started at the 4-yard line. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
