Head coach Kyle Shanahan was back at practice after a quick trip to Canton, Ohio, yesterday to celebrate at general manager John Lynch's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction party. He returned to Santa Clara around 8:30 a.m. this morning.
Below are some notes from today's practice, much of it courtesy of various media sources.
Did not practice:
- LB Azeez Al-Shaair (leg)
- DL Arik Armstead (groin)
- DE Nick Bosa (maintenance day)
- DE Samson Ebukam (leg)
- FB Kyle Juszczyk (maintenance day)
- TE MyCole Pruitt (calf)
- CB Jason Verrett (maintenance day)
- S Jimmie Ward (maintenance day)
Safety Jaquiski Tartt, who is on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list, was seen working on a side field along with several others. Among those players was Samson Ebukam, who reportedly looked to be moving well.
The Niners gave defensive end Nick Bosa, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, cornerback Jason Verrett, and safety Jimmie Ward the day off. Verrett left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child.
Shanahan revealed that linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair is recovering well.
"I think it is going a little bit faster," Shanahan said. "We had that scare on that day of practice. I think we were looking towards Week 1, but I think it's going a little faster than that and healing up pretty nice."
Rookie Hype Machine
It was offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez's turn to get the fans excited before practice.
QB watch
Trey Lance was part of another fumbled exchange with a running back. This time it was JaMycal Hasty. The rookie quarterback later drew "oohs" and "ahhs" from the fans with a "laser beam completion" over the middle to tight end George Kittle. (The Athletic) Still some good and bad, and still some things to clean up before putting Lance on the football field, which is expected.
Jimmy Garoppolo had an impressive estimated 40-yard perfectly-thrown pass downfield to wide receiver Deebo Samuel who took it for a 5-yard score. "One of the best deep balls I've ever seen from him," wrote Jake Hutchinson. (KNBR) "It was Garoppolo's sharpest practice this camp," added Cam Inman (Bay Area News Group)
Josh Rosen hit tight end Jordan Matthews down the sideline for a touchdown reception. (The Athletic) However, the quarterback has had some issues in recent practices.
"I think he started off real well," Shanahan said via Kirk Larrabee. "I think he's taken a couple steps back the last few practices."
Garoppolo finished 9-of-12 passing on the day. Lance was 8-of-12. (Sacramento Bee) Three of the rookie's passes were dropped and he ran twice. (Bay Area News Group)
Other notes
John Lynch will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame today. The team honored its general manager with some signage at Levi's Stadium.
There was this update regarding some football-handling issues between veteran center Alex Mack and his quarterback.
"Honestly, it happens with almost all centers," Shanahan shared after practice. "Maybe Mack a little worse than others. Matt Ryan used to make him change his pants like every period. It doesn't stay dry too long. It's part of football."
Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw looked dominant. Hutchinson even called him the best player on the field during today's practice. Another defensive lineman, newcomer Eddie Yarbrough, "was a menace" while working with the second-team defense. (KNBR)
"He showed up a lot," Shanahan said of Kinlaw after practice. "... He was an issue today."
Kinlaw was even seen jawing with quarterback Garoppolo during team drills.
"He was having fun out there today," Shanahan added.
