On Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the team is releasing cornerback Ken Webster. There were still some moves needed after the Niners signed linebacker Mychal Kendricks and waived linebackers James Burgess Jr. and Donald Payne, and defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes.

The 49ers reached the 85-player limit by Tuesday's 1 p.m. PT deadline.

The team announced that it is waiving Webster, releasing tight end Josh Perkins, and waiving wide receiver Austin Watkins Jr. with an injury designation. Should Watkins clear waivers, he will revert back to the 49ers' injured reserve list.

More roster moves will be made in the next week. The next roster deadline will be getting down to 80 players by Tuesday, August 24, and then down to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31.

After that, NFL teams will begin preparations for Week 1 of the regular season. The 49ers open the season on the road against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, September 12.

The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.

Perkins (6-3, 223) originally signed with the 49ers as a free agent on August 4, 2021, Webster (5-11, 191) originally signed to the 49ers active roster from the Miami Dolphins practice squad on September 16, 2020 and appeared in nine games for the team, and Watkins Jr. (6-3, 210) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 13, 2021.
