"No, I'm not making that announcement," Shanahan responded after the preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers. "Nice try, though."
Shanahan did promise, however, that the announcement would definitely come before September 12's season opener against the Detroit Lions.
So, why not just declare Garoppolo the starter now if things seem to be trending in that direction? Shanahan jumped on a conference call today and explained.
"Everybody wanted me to make a big announcement last night," Shanahan said, "but there's not much advantage for us making an announcement [at quarterback] or any position, so that's kind of the reason why we do that."
Shanahan did express confidence in his quarterbacks, though. Whether it be Garoppolo, Trey Lance, or Nate Sudfeld, the coach feels the 49ers can win.
"I think we have two quarterbacks -- I think we have three quarterbacks [who can play]," Shanahan said. "Being ready to start is about getting a guy a game plan that gives you a chance to win, and I think all our guys are capable of that."
