The San Francisco 49ers have claimed running back Trenton Cannon off waivers, per ESPN's Field Yates.

The New York Jets made Cannon (5-11, 185) a sixth-round selection out of Virginia State in 2018. He signed with Baltimore on September 8 and carried the football two times for five yards during the Ravens' Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Baltimore released Cannon on Tuesday.

Cannon, 27, has appeared in 35 games and registered 50 carries for 151 yards and one touchdown to go along with 20 receptions for 160 yards throughout his four-year career with the Jets (2018-19), Carolina Panthers (2020), and Ravens (2021).

Cannon was among the incoming rookies to meet with the 49ers leading to the 2018 NFL Draft.

The addition comes after a Week 1 knee injury to running back Raheem Mostert, who will have season-ending surgery. Cannon will join a running back group that includes JaMycal Hasty, rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell, and practice squad player Kerryon Johnson.
