This morning, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that Norman was spitting up blood and remained in the hospital's care as a precaution. Later, Ian Rapoport reported that Norman is dealing with two bruised lungs and tissue damage, resulting in the previously reported bleeding. However, the NFL insider added that there is still hope that the veteran cornerback might be available for Week 4's matchup between the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters this afternoon and provided an update.
"Josh Norman had a lung contusion," Shanahan said. "He'll be day-to-day. He'll undergo further tests this week."
Said Shanahan of the possibility of Norman playing against the Seahawks: "Yeah, there's a possibility. He had some fluid in his lungs, and I think that was the scare. So he had to go to the hospital. He's back. He was in our meetings and stuff this morning. The way that goes, it's not like concussion protocol. He's got to clear some imaging. He's got to pass a CT scan to get back to practicing. From what I'm told, that could take anywhere from one day to throughout the week, so we're just going to have to keep monitoring that each day as the week goes."
The coach believes that a Packers running back impacted Norman in the chest, causing the injury.
Shanahan added that K'Waun Williams is dealing with a calf strain and will miss a few weeks. Tight end George Kittle emerged from the game with some calf soreness.
"He'll be day-to-day," Shanahan said.
The 49ers will continue to manage defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw (knee) and Arik Armstead (adductor), as the team has been doing in recent weeks.
Shanahan had an update on running back Elijah Mitchell too.
"He's just continuing to rehab," the coach said. "I know he couldn't go this week. I'm hoping there are better signs this week."
This week, the 49ers expect to get cornerback Davontae Harris (hamstring) and defensive lineman Maurice Hurst (ankle) back from injured reserve.
