"I thought he got better each day," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after Friday's practice. "I think his first day out there, Wednesday, we gave him some limited reps, but he felt good on Thursday. We pushed him even harder on Thursday. And him coming into today, just talking to him, he didn't have any setbacks, and so I feel good to go with him."
The 49ers coach isn't so sure about Trent Williams' status. The veteran tackle could be available on Sunday. That depends on how he progresses over the next day or so.
Williams returned to practice for the first time since Monday, October 18, when he tweaked an ankle injury he initially sustained during Week 5.
"Today was his first day out there," Shanahan said. "So the fact that he was out there was a good sign. He wasn't able to do that last week. Again, we just do stuff half-speed [on Fridays], so he's not challenged a ton on it, but he was moving around and able to do it.
"We'll get on this flight, and we'll see how he reacts tomorrow, and hopefully, he continues to get better and doesn't get worse."
Shanahan expects the 49ers to make some roster moves on Saturday. One will almost certainly be activating defensive tackle Kevin Givens, especially now that Javon Kinlaw's season is officially over.
"We need to get Kevins up," Shanahan said. "He had a good week, especially with what's going on with our D-line right now. Lots of things still up in the air, but yeah, there will be some moves tomorrow."
Defensive end Dee Ford (concussion) is listed as "doubtful" for Sunday's game, which means Jordan Willis could be active for the first time this season. He is coming off a six-game suspension.
"Nothing's set in stone," Shanahan commented. "I've got to see how that plays but we're probably going to need [Willis] up also."
