The Cleveland Browns released him on Monday. Beckham entered the waiver wire because the transaction occurred after the trade deadline.
"After careful consideration, internal discussions and conversations with Odell and his representation, we've determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns," Browns general manager Andrew Berry said via a statement. "We appreciate all his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we've just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell."
The New York Giants drafted Beckham (5-11, 198) out of LSU with the No. 12 overall pick in 2014. He has registered 17 receptions for 232 yards through six games with Cleveland this season. Beckham's last season of over 1,000 yards receiving came in his first year with the Browns. He recorded 1,035 receiving yards and four touchdowns during that 2019 campaign.
San Francisco was interested in acquiring Beckham during the 2019 offseason, but the team couldn't agree with the Giants on compensation. New York ended up sending the receiver to the Browns on March 12, 2019. The move became official the next day.
"We definitely looked into the Odell thing," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said in April of 2019. "John had been working on that for a few months, trying to see if something could happen. I just didn't think we had the stuff that [the Giants] wanted. It didn't work out."
Now, Shanahan will have to game plan against the star receiver.
Beckham, 29, has caught 504 passes for 7,062 yards with 51 touchdowns in 88 game appearances (84 starts) through his eight NFL seasons with the Giants and Browns. He has eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving five times over his career.
