In addition, they've churned through three head coaches in that time period with Bob McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, and Joe Judge, while keeping GM Dave Gettleman, who's struggled to identify top-tier talent in the draft, and has made questionable free agent decisions, which is why Judge was fired this offseason, and Gettleman "retired", just like Tom Coughlin a few years back.
San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters, whose identified talent consistently over the past few years in the draft, is a finalist for New York's GM opening, having completed a second interview yesterday afternoon.
The Giants reportedly are naming their new GM today, per CBS Sports and ESPN, with three frontrunner candidates: Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen, Kansas City Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles, and Peters, all of whom received a second interview with the team.
Peters, 42, began his career as a member of the New England Patriots' scouting department, serving as a pro scout and an area scout over his six-year experience. Peters then moved to the Denver Broncos, where he spent the next eight years, elevating through the ranks as a scout before becoming their director of college scouting in 2016.
Peters has been with the 49ers for five years, having originally served as their Vice President of Player Personnel, before being promoted to assistant general manager last year.
With his background and expertise in the scouting area, losing Peters would be a huge blow for the 49ers. Even if the Giants don't offer him the job, Peters will likely receive many opportunities in the future, including a potential promotion from the 49ers to keep him in-house.
