Schefter adds that this latest development shouldn't impact Garoppolo's trade status, with the 49ers still expected to trade the veteran quarterback this month. That is not to say that the surgery won't affect Garoppolo's trade value.
"Surgery is expected to happen shortly," notes Schefter. "There is 'significant interest' in Garoppolo from multiple teams, per sources. Preliminary estimates are that Garoppolo is expected to resume throwing sometime prior to the July 4 holiday. If and when a trade is consummated, Garoppolo would be available to begin working with the new coaching and medical staff."
Last year, the 49ers traded up to select quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick. Most expect him to be the team's starter come Week 1 of the 2022 season.
Garoppolo, 30, completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,810 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions through 15 game appearances last season. He joined the 49ers in 2017 after a mid-season trade with the New England Patriots.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport later added that Garoppolo's surgery will repair a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder.
"He won't throw for 16 weeks, but should be ready for the season if all goes well," tweeted Rapoport.
Garoppolo initially injured his shoulder during the 49ers' Wild Card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. He played through it against the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round. However, the injury was not listed on team injury reports ahead of the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams.
"It feels great," the quarterback said of his shoulder on January 28. "Yeah, arm's ready to roll."
