Schultz notes that Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada wants to deploy run-pass option on offense, making Garoppolo a possible fit.
"[Washington's] Ron Rivera not only believes his team can win now, but has over $30M in cap as well," adds Schultz.
On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Garoppolo is generating "significant interest" from multiple teams. The Steelers and Commanders may be among those teams.
Schefter also reported that Garoppolo will undergo shoulder surgery, keeping him sidelined until the summer. However, the new development may not deter interested teams and is unlikely to impact Garoppolo's trade value.
"Preliminary estimates are that Garoppolo is expected to resume throwing sometime prior to the July 4 holiday," Schefter reported.
The trade talks for Garoppolo could heat up this week as NFL teams gather in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. While the 49ers coaching staff will not be in attendance, general manager John Lynch and his staff will be there. Lynch is scheduled to speak with reporters on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. PT.
