There's no secret that the 49ers need some help at the cornerback position, and this could be the year that they aggressively pursue a sought after free agent at the position. With Ambry Thomas returning for his sophomore season, and Emmanuel Moseley still under contract the 49ers are still in need of a few pieces to bring the secondary together.

On Monday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported there are rumblings and rumors surrounding the 49ers pursuing some of the top cornerbacks in the market. The 49ers insider also added that the 49ers are over the cap but there are some contracts that can be restructured thus opening up some space.

Maiocco mentions that the 49ers are aggressively pursuing top cornerback targets in this free agency class, and some of those top names include J.C. Jackson, Carlton Davis, and Stephon Gilmore.

Jackson headlines the free agent market for the cornerbacks this year after coming away with 17 interceptions over the past two seasons and is only 26 years of age. Another player that the 49ers could target at an affordable price is Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis. Bringing in a player with playoff experience and a super bowl ring would only help this young group. Davis stands 6'1 and has the length to cover any receiver in the league, though he has an injury history. The stud veteran Stephon Gilmore is another option for the 49ers but would almost certainly be a short term move, with Gilmore turning 32 this next season.

Whichever of these talented players the 49ers intend to sign, they will certainly make an immediate impact next season.
