Now, the Dolphins don't have that pick either. In a bit of a Wednesday-morning shocker during an NFL offseason that was already among one of the wildest we've seen in recent years, Miami shipped that selection (No. 29 overall), a second-rounder, and a fourth-rounder in this year's draft, plus fourth- and sixth-rounders in 2023 to the Kansas City Chiefs for All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
The Dolphins still own one of San Francisco's third-round picks this year and its first-rounder in 2023. The 49ers won't make a first-round selection again until 2024, barring any trades.
Obviously, the draft pick isn't the only 49ers connection. Hill's new head coach in Miami is former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, a longtime assistant who followed head coach Kyle Shanahan through the NFL over the past 16 years.
Hill will join wide receiver Trent Sherfield and running back Raheem Mostert in Miami. Both left the 49ers for the Dolphins in free agency, with the ties to McDaniel—and for Sherfield, wide receiver coach Wes Welker—obviously playing a part in those decisions.
Meanwhile, as several NFL teams make massive moves to improve this offseason, the 49ers have been relatively quiet. They made a solid move in acquiring cornerback Charvarius Ward but have otherwise been more cautious, partly due to a shortage in salary-cap space.
