Local pro days provide NFL teams with an in-person opportunity to work out prospects who are residents of nearby areas. The event allows teams to spend some extra time with local players they may be interested in drafting while also giving those players a valuable chance to impress their local franchise.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were in attendance, while former 49ers offensive lineman Joe Staley and current 49ers players Brandon Aiyuk and Javon Kinlaw also stopped by to observe.
This year's 49ers local pro day was lacking in high-round draft prospects, although 49ers beat reporter Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group tweeted that he "saw some camp-possible guys" among the attendees. Notable names in attendance included Cal quarterback Chase Garbers (6,580 yards, 50 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in four college seasons); former Stanford and Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello, who went undrafted in 2021 and had a preseason stint with the Los Angeles Chargers; and South Dakota wide receiver Caleb Vander Esch, who is a cousin of Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.
Video footage of the event (shot by David Lombardi of The Athletic) can be seen below, as can a complete roster of players in attendance. Cal was the most-represented school with 11 players, followed by San Jose State with seven players.
