Samuel wanted to be traded and reportedly halted contract extension talks himself. The 49ers didn't grant him his wish. No one is certain what caused the rift between the two sides, but there has been a lot of speculation. Whatever the reason, San Francisco's work will begin on mending the relationship and trying to sign their do-everything receiver to a contract extension.
One teammate who knows about waiting around for a contract extension is defensive lineman Arik Armstead, who joined Good Morning Football on Friday and shared his thoughts on the Deebo Samuel situation.
"Man, I love Deebo. I think the whole organization loves Deebo," Armstead told Peter Schrager. "I haven't been privy to the conversations with him, Kyle (Shanahan), and John (Lynch), but I think they'll get it figured out. He did so many amazing things for our team this year, and he should definitely be rewarded for that. And I think it's going to happen.
"Sometimes, you can be a little impatient, and I've been in the situation too where I'm about to receive a big payday. You can get a little antsy and try to control that process. But I think, with a little patience, I think it'll work out."
Samuel contributed 1,770 all-purpose yards and 14 total touchdowns in 2021. San Francisco made him a second-round pick in 2019, and he is entering his fourth NFL season and the final year of his rookie contract.
Armstead is scheduled to announce the 49ers' second-round pick (No. 61 overall) and the team's first selection of the draft on Friday night from Las Vegas.
