Then there are the others like the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks. However, there may be less urgency there, with both teams prepared to wait to see if the 49ers release Garoppolo ahead of Week 1.
One former NFL player turned analyst discussed the possibility of another team, the New York Giants, entering their name as a potential trade candidate. Former NFL quarterback David Carr felt the Giants might have added Mitch Trubisky because the team doesn't know what they have in Daniel Jones. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers eventually took Trubisky off the market.
"You're coming in, you're a fresh new head coach (Brian Daboll), you don't know if Daniel is the guy," Carr said (h/t Sportskeeda). "You didn't draft him. You didn't bring him in there. You just kind of ... have to use him. So I thought they would make a move for [Trubisky]. They didn't."
With that option off the table, Carr believes making a move for Garoppolo might make sense for the Giants.
"Now with Jimmy, I think the issue is his shoulder," Car continued. "No one really knows. I think what teams are going to do is they're going to wait until the first or second preseason game, if Jimmy gets [into those games] in San Francisco, and just kind of see. Does he look healthy?
"And then I think that's when you might see the Giants make a move, or another team make a move for Jimmy, because Jimmy G can win some games for somebody. He absolutely still can play at a high level. He won a lot of games in San Francisco. I think the only issue is just his health. If he's healthy, then very possibly the Giants could make a move for him."
It's worth noting that the Giants currently have just $6.02 million in salary-cap space, per Over The Cap.
