Samuel, 26, has been seeking an extension all offseason, and even demanded a trade at one point, but head coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated his lack of worry around Samuel's contract talks on Monday during an appearance on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami.
"The days of holding out and stuff are a little bit different now because players, regardless of what the team decides later, always have to pay [the fines] back." Now, those fines can't get paid back [because of the new CBA]. What I do know is I'm not worried about it not getting done. I feel very confident that Deebo's going to be on our team this year, and he's going to be for many years after. I do believe he'll get a deal."
With the new CBA rules, players are handed fines that cannot be returned for days missed during training camp. Additionally, if players elect not to report for training camp, they could be subject to losing an accrued NFL season, which, in Samuel's case would make him a restricted free agent in 2023, rather than hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent should he not receive an extension.
