The San Francisco 49ers have signed on-again-off-again defensive back Dontae Johnson to the practice squad, per general manager John Lynch. Johnson was part of Tuesday's roster cut-down to 53 players.

The versatile defensive back has shown Lynch and company that he can play every position—outside corner, nickel, and safety. That has kept Johnson on and off the roster since the 49ers made him a fourth-round draft pick out of NC State in 2014.

Johnson, 30, registered 30 tackles, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble through 16 game appearances (three starts) with the 49ers last season. He has recorded 214 tackles, a sack, 26 passes defensed, two interceptions, two touchdowns, and a forced fumble in 94 game appearances (28 starts) through his eight NFL seasons.
