The San Francisco 49ers hope to get some help for Wilson, ensuring that the veteran running back stays healthy and doesn't have to do the job alone. That help will come internally, though.
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Thursday afternoon and was asked if he feels Wilson needs some help in the coming games.
"I do," Lynch responded while speaking with Tom Tolbert and Adam Copeland. "The other day, he had those 18 carries. I think Kyle is cognizant of that. We didn't have a ton of plays offensively, so the [Jordan] Masons, the Tevin Colemans, the Marlon Macks didn't have their [opportunities]. But I promise you those are coming."
Rookie running back Ty Davis-Price suffered a high-ankle sprain during Week 2's contest against the Seattle Seahawks. He could be nearing a return.
"I think we're feeling some promising news about Ty Davis-Price being ready here in the near future," Lynch shared. "His rehab's going really well. And so we like that collection of talent.
"Thus far, Jeff has been doing a lot of the work. And Jeff's deal is he's always been a really good player when he's stayed healthy, and that's been his challenge. But he's really worked hard this offseason to try to stay healthy and stay out there on the field.
"Thus far, he's been doing a really good job, but we're going to have to get other contributions and keep Jeff healthy, and let's see what JP Mason can do."
The 49ers added Tevin Coleman to the practice squad on September 21. The veteran running back was already familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, having played with the Niners from 2019 through 2020.
"Tevin Coleman, he's done it for a long time in this league," Lynch continued. "Marlon Mack hasn't had a lot of [opportunities] since he's been here, but he's a talented player. And then hopefully we get Ty Davis back, and Elijah [Mitchell] down the road here a little bit, and that can be a real strength for this team."
