Both right tackle Mike McGlinchey and cornerback Charvarius Ward exited the game with injuries before halftime and did not return. McGlinchey tried to continue to play but eventually needed to be sidelined. Shanahan said the offensive lineman sustained a calf contusion and is day-to-day.
Ward left the game with a groin injury. He, too, is day-to-day. Shanahan added that he hopes both Ward and McGlinchey will be ready for this weekend.
Talanoa Hufanga left the game early, was tested for a concussion, cleared, and returned to the game. However, he starts the week in the concussion protocol.
"He had symptoms this morning," Shanahan shared. "He'll be in the concussion protocol. ... I think [he suffered the concussion] really early in the game because we took him into the tent early. I know that. He passed [the test] then. He passed one after the game. But then there's always a third one the day after a game, and he came in with some symptoms today."
Shanahan provided the following additional injury updates from the game.
- TE Charlie Woerner suffered an A.C. sprain and is day-to-day
- LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is dealing with knee tendinitis but should be fine
- DE Drake Jackson suffered a knee sprain and is day-to-day
- DE Samson Ebukam is dealing with Achilles tendinitis and is day-to-day
The coach sounds optimistic that the 49ers might get defensive end Nick Bosa (groin) and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) back this week. Bosa missed Sunday's game against the Falcons, and Williams has not played since Week 3. So what are the chances of getting both players back this week?
"A lot better than last week," Shanahan responded. "I'm really hoping for it. I think there's a decent chance."
As for Arik Armstead, Shanahan would be "very surprised" if the 49ers got the defensive lineman back for this weekend's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
"But hopefully, he'll have a chance maybe at L.A.," Shanahan added. "If not, then we'll have our bye week, which gives him another week, and hopefully, we'll get him back by then. But we're still not sure right now."
Last week, safety Jimmie Ward had surgery on his broken hand. Shanahan hasn't been able to talk to his veteran defender yet but has gotten encouraging updates on his recovery.
"There will be a chance for him to play with his cast on," Shanahan noted. "... It might be a little too optimistic for this week, but again, I haven't had a chance to speak to him personally. I was just told this a little bit ago, that it's going well, and he'll be able to eventually play with a cast, whether that's this week [or] next week. I hope it's this week, but it's too early for me to know for sure."
