The San Francisco 49ers were up against the 2023 salary cap with the signing of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and quarterback Sam Darnold. They got some cap relief on Tuesday. One year after signing Charvarius Ward in free agency, the 49ers have restructured the cornerback's contract, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

The Niners are converting $12.48 million of his salary into a signing bonus and adding three void years to his deal, creating just under $10 million in salary-cap space.

Last offseason, San Francisco signed Ward to a three-year deal worth up to $42 million with $26.7 million guaranteed. The cornerback registered 87 tackles, three tackles for a loss, 11 passes defensed, an interception, and a forced fumble through 17 starts with the 49ers last season, per Pro Football Reference.

The Dallas Cowboys signed Ward (6-1, 196) as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee in 2018. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
