According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the San Francisco 49ers have not discussed a potential trade with quarterback Trey Lance. That shouldn't surprise anyone, but the coach was asked about trade discussions after Tuesday's practice.

Second-year quarterback Brock Purdy is trending well in his recovery from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He is doing some limited throwing about three times a week and will ramp up his workload in the coming months.

The 49ers remain optimistic that Purdy could start practicing in late August and potentially be the team's Week 1 starter against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated asked Shanahan if the team has spoken to Lance about a potential trade should Purdy be the Week 1 starter.


"No," Shanahan responded before moving on to the next question.

The 49ers invested a lot in Lance, making him the No. 3 overall draft pick in 2021. Last year, the team added Purdy with the last overall draft pick. Purdy was the 49ers' starting quarterback for last season's final eight games after injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. If healthy, Purdy is the frontrunner to be San Francisco's starter to open the upcoming season.

That leaves Lance and veteran Sam Darnold competing for the QB2 job. The two have been switching off with first-team reps. As 2022 proved, you can never have too many quarterbacks. The 49ers went through four quarterbacks last season and didn't have a healthy one in the NFC Championship Game loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.
