Day 6 of the San Francisco 49ers training camp is officially over, as it was a lighter practice following a scrimmage-heavy day on Monday, with the team following a balanced approach with the pass and run game.

The offense and defense each had their moments, with quarterback Brock Purdy having his best practice following Trey Lance's strong performance on Monday, while the defense accumulated eight sacks on the day, the most of training camp so far.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits Brandon Aiyuk for 10-15 yards on a good throw, with Ambry Thomas in coverage.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance misfires to George Kittle on a five-yard out route way wide. He had Jordan Mason wide open in the flat, but the read to Kittle wasn't too bad, more so the inaccurate placement.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen hits Tay Martin on a 20-yard play-action shot. Martin was the second read on an intermediate crosser, and was wide open, with Allen hitting him for a nice gain.

Brock Purdy (QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits Deebo Samuel on a 20-yard crosser to the left side off play-action. Ambry Thomas was in coverage.

Sam Darnold(QB2)


  1. Darnold didn't throw a pass during this set of plays.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits Deebo Samuel on a screen, but Isaiah Oliver appeared to punch the ball out for a fumble on the run, although the ball went out of bounds.
  2. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to George Kittle on a 10-yard out-route that Deommodore Lenoir was all over for a near interception. However, Lenoir was flagged for holding on the play, which is why he was able to keep up. Still, Purdy's average arm strength was seen in the play.

Sam Darnold(QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold hits Deebo Samuel over the middle for 10-15 yards in between Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles.
  2. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion short of his intended receiver, but was hit by his own offensive lineman, who was pushed back by a defender, on the play.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen hits Brandon Aiyuk on a nice 22-yard out route to the left side between the second and third levels of the defense. Cornerback Tre Swilling was in coverage on the play, but appeared in zone coverage.
  2. Brandon Allen is sacked by Taco Charlton, who beat Joey Fisher easily for a quick sack.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked by Alex Barrett, who beat Spencer Burford to get to the quarterback on a good day for the defensive lineman.

Trey Lance(QB2)


  1. Trey Lance hits Brandon Aiyuk on a 15-yard comeback with tight coverage by Ambry Thomas. This was the best throw of the day overall, and a laser from Trey Lance, who needed the arm strength to get the ball on Aiyuk with Thomas draped all over him.
  2. Trey Lance hits Tyrion Davis-Price on a screen pass.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked, as Javon Hargrave beats Spencer Burford to get to the quarterback.
  2. Brock Purdy is sacked on a linebacker blitz from Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, who got there untouched. Purdy needed to get rid of this ball sooner to avoid the sack off the blitz, but didn't identify the rusher in time, leading to the killed play.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance is sacked by Javon Kinlaw, who beat Keith Ismael on a rep to get to the quarterback.
  2. Trey Lance goes through his progressions, stepping up in the pocket and hitting Brayden Willis for a four-yard gain and four yards after the catch, in the flat as his last read.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen is sacked, as Matt Pryor is beaten around the end at right tackle, killing the play before the quarterback hit Danny Gray for a 20-25 yard gain downfield.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits George Kittle for 10-12 yards on the right sideline on a good pass with Tashaun Gipson serving as a trailer.

Sam Darnold(QB2)


  1. Sam Darnold is sacked on a safety blitz from George Odum, leading to cleanup duty for T.Y. McGill, who made the final sack. Darnold hit Tay Martin on an out-route after the sack.

Redzone: 1st Period


Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy hits Tyrion Davis-Price with a checkdown dump-off in the flat. Davis-Price caught the ball and ran hard, lowering his shoulder on Fred Warner.
  2. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to Brandon Aiyuk on a ball too wide at the back of the endzone. There was good protection and Purdy waited, but didn't find an open throw, so he rolled out to his right side, attempting a difficult throw to Aiyuk in the back corner of the endzone, and misfired.
  3. Brock Purdy hits Deebo Samuel over the middle for an 8-10 yard touchdown.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance hits Jack Colleto in the flat on the left off a play-action where the fullback essentially served as a tight end.
  2. Trey Lance throws an incompletion to Ross Dwelley on the right sideline in the endzone. This was Lance's worst throw of the day, as he was rolling to his right and misfired too far inside on an out-route to Dwelley, allowing George Odum, who was trailing in coverage, to swoop in for the pass breakup, whereas if the ball led Dwelley to the outside, he could get two feet in and score a touchdown.

Sam Darnold(QB3)

  1. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion on a play-action rollout to Cameron Latu on a nearly-intercepted pass. Darnold should've immediately hit Latu coming off play-action, but took too long looking at throws in the endzone before circling back to his tight end, and the defense had already converged at that point.
  2. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion on another near interception, with linebacker Dee Winters serving as the beneficiary. Darnold attempted a sidearm throw from the pocket, but Winters was ahead of the receiver and got both hands on the low pass, but couldn't hold onto the ball.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked on a throw to Jauan Jennings that could've been a touchdown, but the sack killed the play.

Sam Darnold(QB2)


  1. Sam Darnold looks for Tyrion Davis-Price in the endzone, but forces another well-covered ball, and the pass is broken up as the running back tried to lay out for it.

Overall Grade


None of the quarterbacks necessary impressed on Tuesday, but Brock Purdy arguably looked the best of the bunch, completing most of his passes, although there were a few questionable throws. However, a penalty was called on one, while another dropped interception came after a sack was called, so I didn't count those plays into my grading system. Purdy also took four sacks, of which 1 was clearly his fault, and you could've put another on him for not getting the ball out earlier, but it was a solid day for the quarterback, who earns a "B" grade on the day.

Trey Lance had some of the biggest "ups" and the lowest "lows" of the day, making the best throw on a downfield dart to Brandon Aiyuk near the right sideline in tight coverage that required good velocity, but also making two poor throws on the miss to Kittle and the miss to Dwelley. He earns a "B-" grade on the day.

Darnold arguably had the worst training camp practice for a quarterback this offseason, completing just 1/5 passes, with multiple plays nearly getting intercepted. On a day where the quarterback rep distribution was a little shaky, Darnold couldn't capitalize on his opportunities, earning an "F" for his performance Tuesday.
