It was a dominant day for the defense, who recorded a whopping ten sacks on the day, while the 49ers' quarterbacks underwhelmed, leaving a sour taste in fans' mouths as training camp comes to an end.
What was the context behind Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold's days on Monday?
RELATED
11-on-11s: 1st Period
Brock Purdy (QB1)
- Brock Purdy is sacked by Arik Armstead and Clelin Ferrell immediately as he dropped back off of play-action. Purdy threw an incompletion after the sack.
Sam Darnold(QB2)
- Sam Darnold hits Deebo Samuel on a 15-20 yard pass to the right side on a good delivery from the backup quarterback.
Brandon Allen(QB3)
- Brandon Allen is sacked by Austin Bryant, who came off the edge, beating Matt Pryor for the sack.
Brock Purdy (QB1)
- Brock Purdy hits Ray-Ray McCloud on a 25-yard deep crosser for what would be his best throw of the day. In a real game setting, Purdy would've likely gotten the ball off, but been hit pretty hard, as a plethora of defenders were coming right at him as he released the ball.
- False start kills the play.
Trey Lance(QB2)
- Trey Lance is sacked on his first dropback, as Alex Barrett beat Matt Pryor fairly quickly off the edge. Lance continued with the play and tried forcing a pass into a tight window over the middle, leading to an interception by Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles.
Redzone: 1st Period
Brock Purdy(QB1)
- Brock Purdy is sacked on the play. Couldn't tell whether it was his fault not getting the ball out earlier, or on the offensive line, but Purdy attempted a pass afterwards, throwing a high fade up to Christian McCaffrey, who jumped up and nearly made an amazing catch, although he couldn't hold on as he went to the ground.
- Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to Deebo Samuel running a five-yard out route, missing him wide on a bad throw. Charvarius Ward was in coverage.
- Brock Purdy hits Christian McCaffrey on a screen pass out of the slot after faking the handoff to Deebo Samuel.
Sam Darnold(QB2)
- Sam Darnold throws a near interception, firing a 15-yard pass towards the front of the endzone, but Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles got two hands jumping high for the ball, and couldn't hold on.
- Sam Darnold hits Ray-Ray McCloud for a 17-yard touchdown in the back of the endzone on a good throw. Darnold could've been sacked, as it was a longer play, but a solid throw for the score.
Brandon Allen(QB3)
- Brandon Allen throws a screen pass to Tyrion Davis-Price to start the drive.
- Brandon Allen is sacked, as T.Y. McGill easily beat Joey Fisher to get to the quarterback.
- Brandon Allen hits Jordan Mason, who was lined out wide as a receiver, for 10 yards and a first down.
Brock Purdy(QB1)
- Brock Purdy hits Jauan Jennings for a 10-yard out on a touchdown, giving his receiver a good ball in front as he approached the sidelines, with Charvarius Ward in coverage.
- Brock Purdy hits Tay Martin for a 7-yard touchdown on a slant, which the wideout ran in for the score.
- Brock Purdy hits Willie Snead on a 6-yard in for the touchdown, with Charvarius Ward in coverage.
Trey Lance(QB2)
- Trey Lance hits Chris Conley on a slant for a 10-yard touchdown.
- Trey Lance rushes up the middle on a designed quarterback draw, gaining around five on the play and nearly scoring a touchdown.
- Trey Lance is sacked by Austin Bryant, beating one of the backup tackles, before throwing the ball away.
Move The Ball(Inside the Redzone): Period 1
Brock Purdy(QB1)
1st & 10: Brock Purdy throws a checkdown over the middle to Deebo Samuel for five yards, with the wideout getting five more after the catch.
1st & Goal: Christian McCaffrey has a good run for seven yards, setting up 2nd & 3 at the three yard-line.
2nd & Goal: Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to Danny Gray on an out-route to the left side, which the receiver drops, as the pass goes through Gray's hands.
3rd & Goal: Brock Purdy scrambles to the right for a potential score, although there was a flag, likely against the offense pre-snap, on the play.
Trey Lance(QB2)
1st & 10: Trey Lance hits Ray-Ray McCloud for a 4-yard out.
2nd & 6: Trey Lance draws the defense offsides.
2nd & 1: Jordan Mason takes the carry for a six-yard gain and a First & Goal at the 7.
1st & Goal: Trey Lance draws the defense offsides again, this time being Austin Bryant.
1st & Goal: Trey Lance looks left on a play-action, finds nothing there, and scrambles for a loss of two yards. Would've preferred a throwaway as the decision. The routes ran towards the left side were fairly poor, in fairness, leading to a difficult dilemma for Lance.
2nd & Goal: Jordan Mason rushes for two yards.
3rd & Goal: Trey Lance makes a poor throw to his left, nearly getting intercepted in the redzone.
Brock Purdy(QB1)
1st & Goal: Ty Davis-Price takes the carry for 4-5 yards.
2nd & Goal: Ty Davis-Price is stuffed by Fred Warner for a gain of zero.
3rd & Goal: Brock Purdy is sacked by the combination of Arik Armstead and Clelin Ferrell, again, this time in the redzone.
11-on-11s: 2nd Period
Brock Purdy(QB1)
- Brock Purdy throws a deep incompletion on a fade to Deebo Samuel with the ball just going past the hands of the receiver. I honestly thought this rep was on the receiver, rather than the quarterback. As the ball was being released, Samuel seemingly bumped Deommodore Lenoir as he was preparing for a 50-50 ball, slowing down before going forward with his route. I'm not sure whether there was a miscommunication in the play, but a fine ball from Purdy.
- Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to George Kittle over the middle. Jake Brendel produced a pretty bad snap, and Purdy got the ball, rushing a decision, and gave Kittle a 50/50 ball that Tashaun Gipson broke up.
Sam Darnold(QB2)
- Sam Darnold hits Tyrion Davis-Price on a quick checkdown, simulating a 3rd & 6 in situational drills. It seemed that Darnold immediately looked to the checkdown, which was interesting, rather than hitting his progression and ending at the shorter throw. With his processing, I wonder if he wanted to just give it a shot as quick as he saw it, but question the immediate decision.
- Sam Darnold is sacked on a play that was against the quarterback, as he was too slow with his process in the pocket, eventually scrambling right and dumping it off to Deebo Samuel.
Trey Lance(QB3)
- Trey Lance throws an 8-yard out to Jauan Jennings on a good ball.
- Trey Lance is sacked by Spencer Waege before he can get a play off.
Move The Ball: Period 2
Brock Purdy(QB1)
1st & 10: Christian McCaffrey's run is stuffed when going to the left, with Clelin Ferrell shedding a Trent Williams block for the play.
2nd & 11: Brock Purdy throws an incompletion on a wheel route to McCaffrey, who didn't look up for the ball as the quarterback threw it.
3rd & 11: Brock Purdy throws a checkdown to Christian McCaffrey for a few yards.
4th & 4: Brock Purdy throws an interception that is deflected by Dre Greenlaw and into the hands of Tashaun Gipson. Purdy faced a heavy blitz from Wilks and threw an off-platform pass trying to make a play, which ended poorly to finish his drive.
Sam Darnold(QB2)
1st & 10: Sam Darnold is sacked by Alex Barrett or Taco Charlton on a play that just took too long in the quarterback's hands. Darnold threw an incompletion after the sack.
2nd & 10: Tyrion Davis-Price rushes for a good 6-7 yard gain off a toss.
3rd & 3: Sam Darnold is easily sacked, but then rolls out and hits Brayden Willis deep for 45 yards, who runs all the way to the endzone, but has the ball knocked out right before a touchdown, with George Odum and Ji'Ayir Brown there.
1st & 10: Run play for two yards.
2nd & 8: Sam Darnold hits Jordan Mason on a screen pass, but Marcelino McCrary-Ball for the stuff.
3rd & 7: Facing pressure from Jalen Graham, Sam Darnold throws the ball away.
Brock Purdy(QB1)
1st & 10: Christian McCaffrey rushes to the left for three yards.
2nd & 7: Christian McCaffrey has a nice cutback for 7 yards and a first down.
1st & 10: Christian McCaffrey rushes up the middle for 11 yards.
1st & 10: Brock Purdy is sacked on a play-action pass, as nobody was open, hitting George Kittle after the sack.
Trey Lance(QB2)
1st & 10: Ronald Awatt's run is stuffed by T.Y. McGill, who had a nice day overall.
2nd & 12: Trey Lance is sacked by Austin Bryant, beating Leroy Watson, while overthrowing a ball to Danny Gray that was double-covered after the sack.
3rd & 12: Khalan Laborn rushes for 8 yards.
4th & 4: Zane Gonzalez drills the field goal.
Final Stats
Brock Purdy: 7/13, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 4 sacks
Trey Lance: 3/4, TD, INT(after sack), near INT, 3 sacks
Sam Darnold: 4/6, TD, near INT, 3 sacks
Overall Grade
It was a really underwhelming day for the quarterbacks to wrap up the open portion of training camp, as each of the three players struggled, despite some of the positive sacks, making some poor throws and decisions, while also taking some bad sacks.
Brock Purdy earns a "C+", as he had a hot redzone period, firing off three consecutive touchdown passes, but cooled off considerably after that. I honestly didn't mind some of Purdy's incompletions: he had a drop from Danny Gray, a solid ball on an incompletion to Deebo Samuel, and a fine pass to McCaffrey when the running back wasn't looking on the wheel route. But, Purdy took some bad sacks again, and had a few plays where he struggled under pressure: the interception and the 50/50 ball to Kittle over the middle that was a PBU stand out.
Trey Lance earns a "C-" on the day, as his stats look fine with a 75% completion rate, but he took some sacks, with an interception coming after one, and had a near interception in the redzone, which should've been a converted opportunity. It wasn't really a clean day for Lance, who couldn't build off much, albeit in lower opportunity, and struggled to put drives together. The reason his grade isn't lower? Didn't think most of his sacks were his fault, and he did also draw the defense offsides twice on the same drive.
Sam Darnold earns a "C-" on a day where he experienced similar ups and downs that have plagued him throughout camp. He had some nice throws, with the 15-20 yarder to Deebo and the 17-yard touchdown to McCloud standing out, but, once again, took some bad sacks and processed slower after getting off that first read. Nothing too special from him on Monday, as he also had a near interception to Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles.
Stay tuned for the joint practices against the Las Vegas Raiders at the end of the week!
