San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan laid out the quarterback plan for Sunday's preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. With Brock Purdy and the rest of the starters unlikely to play, everyone wonders which quarterback, Trey Lance or Sam Darnold, will head out on the field first. Both are competing for the QB2 job.

"It's not set in stone," Shanahan said Friday on KNBR's "Tolbert & Copes" show. "It can always change. But right now, we're trying to plan on giving Trey most of the first half and Sam most of the second half. We wanted to balance it out that way.

"I rarely play starters in Week 1 (of the preseason). I have before. It usually depends on how those two practices go (the 49ers and Raiders held joint practices on Thursday and Friday). And we had two real hard practices that we were real happy with.

"So I don't plan on playing many starters, so we'll have a couple of groups in there. But we've got enough guys that can go out there and hopefully make some plays for both quarterbacks."

Lance entered last season as the 49ers' starting quarterback but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during Week 2. The team added Darnold via free agency in March.

It sounds like we will get a good look at both quarterbacks on Sunday, with each hoping to use the opportunity to distance himself from the other.
