Womack sustained the injury during the final play of practice on Wednesday, Shanahan said. He is expected to go on injured reserve but does not need surgery and will likely return later this season.
"I think it's like six to eight weeks, something like that," Shanahan said of Womack's timetable to return.
Womack (5-10, 189) is in his second season with the 49ers after being selected in Round 5 of the 2022 NFL Draft. He had 19 tackles in 16 games as a rookie with one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Womack played nine snaps on defense and 17 snaps on special teams in the Week 1 opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was credited with one tackle.
The 49ers could look to their practice squad to fill Womack's spot on the roster. Among the cornerbacks currently on the 49ers practice squad are Shemar Jean-Charles, Qwuantrezz Knight and Tre Swilling. The team is also expected to get injured rookie Darrell Luter Jr. back from Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform status in the weeks ahead.
"I've got a good idea (about Womack's replacement) but we haven't made it official yet, so I can't say," Shanahan said.
Every other currently active player on the 49ers is expected to be available for the team's game against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday.
