"It definitely wasn't his best game, but I think Brock played well," Shanahan said. "I mean, he definitely wasn't perfect. Missed a couple of throws, but he also made a couple of plays that I didn't think were there. So I was definitely happy with him."
The next day, after reviewing what his team did against their Week 3 opponent, the coach was even more impressed with his quarterback.
"After watching the film, I was even more impressed than I saw last night after the game," Shanahan said Friday afternoon via a conference call. "We missed a number of blitz pickups where he had some free hitters in his face, and I think that made us struggle. That always makes it harder with accuracy and stuff because you're going to get the balls tipped if you throw it right. So you got to kind of avoid those things."
Purdy finished the game 25-of-37 for a career-high 310 yards and two touchdowns. His passer rating of 111.3 tied his season-high (Week 1 at Steelers).
The New York defense tried to test Purdy, blitzing him on 37 of his 43 dropbacks, per Pro Football Focus. The young quarterback was 19-of-31 for 252 yards with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 108.5 on those plays.
Shanahan added, "I thought he hung in there, made a few mistakes, and had a hell of a game."
The quarterback was well-prepared for the pass-rushing onslaught the Giants threw at him. The 49ers expected it.
"Yeah, that's their scheme," Purdy said after the game. "That's how they've done things. They're pretty good at it, so going into the game we had an idea, obviously, just on film and whatnot that that's what we're going to get. They stuck to it, and yeah, it was a four-quarter game."
