Samuel will have a new teammate on the field when work resumes on Monday. This week, the 49ers traded for pass rusher Chase Young, adding to a defensive front that already included Nick Bosa, Javon Hargrave, and Arik Armstead.
"It's just crazy, all the guys that we got on the D-line," Samuel told Kay Adams on Thursday. "And just to add him, it's such an impact on his career that he had so far. Just for him to be a part of the team is kind of amazing.
"We already got good guys out there on the D-line right now. Just to add him is just like an extra little up that I think we need."
Samuel shared that he reached out to Young after news broke that the two were about to become teammates.
"He's like, 'Man, I was just on the massage table and just get a call, and I'm going to the Niners.'" Samuel said of the conversation. "He's like, 'S--t, I'm ready to go.'"
San Francisco sent a 2024 compensatory third-round pick to Washington in exchange for Young. That's a bargain for a player who has produced more sacks (five) this season than any other 49ers defender.
Even if Young, in the final year of his rookie contract, departs after this season, the 49ers are poised to receive a 2025 compensatory third-round pick in return.
San Francisco has lost three consecutive games and hopes the bye week will provide an opportunity to regroup and recharge.
"Everybody had a meeting on Tuesday, was like, 'Yo, I know everybody's tired and fatigued. We've been going for so long,'" Samuel shared. "It was good that we get a bye in the middle of the season so we can come back fresh and ready to go because we know what it takes and we know the next step that it's going to take for us to get where we want to be."
