Before the showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs, Purdy sought insight and advice from 49ers icon and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Steve Young. On Monday, Young shared the advice he would offer the young quarterback following the heartbreaking defeat in Las Vegas.
"Brock told you last week after the championship game, I'm not the biggest, I'm not the strongest, I'm not the fastest," Young told Dan Patrick, paraphrasing the quarterback's words. "So he's going to do it in his own Brock Purdy [way], and his superpower is processing. And he processed very well yesterday. What he is and who he is is all on display.
"And it's like you said, he's one of the favorites for the MVP next year. It's all that kind of stuff."
Young noted that in today's NFL, it's tough to win it all if you aren't a quarterback who can threaten defenses with both his arms and legs. While Purdy excels at improvisation and extending plays in the pocket, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on another level. Despite the 49ers likely owning a superior roster, particularly with their offensive star power, Mahomes consistently proves himself as a game-changing force on the football field.
Young remarked, "And so I would tell Brock, though, in today's game, make sure that you can go get those 60, 80, 100 yards and just maybe adjust your game so you make sure that you can go get those."
Purdy's 4,280 passing yards this season set a single-season franchise record. We'll see if he can improve upon his impressive 2023 campaign next season.
At just over 24 years old, Purdy became the third-youngest quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, trailing only Dan Marino and Ben Roethlisberger. He'll dust himself off and begin preparing for the next season with unwavering determination, giving his all in the process.
