The Chicago Bears drafted Floyd (6-6, 240) out of Georgia with the No. 9 overall pick in 2016. He registered 32 tackles, including nine for a loss, 19 quarterback hits, 10.5 sacks, a pass defensed, and a forced fumble through 17 game appearances (16 starts) with the Buffalo Bills last season, per Pro Football Reference.
"It was mystifying that it took most of last offseason for Floyd to land a job, and then he finished the 2023 campaign with 10.5 sacks as a rotational player. Same as he ever was," wrote NFL Media's Gregg Rosenthal.
Floyd, 31, has recorded 370 tackles, including 63 for a loss, 122 quarterback hits, 58 sacks, two safeties, 14 passes defensed, two interceptions, a touchdown, and four forced fumbles in 121 game appearances (120 starts) over his eight NFL seasons with the Bears, Los Angeles Rams, and Bills. He has started at least 16 games and played in every game each season since 2018.
The signing complements All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa on the other side of the defensive front. Floyd has recorded at least nine sacks in each of the past four seasons and was part of the Rams' Super Bowl LVI-winning team.
Over the weekend, it was reported that the 49ers plan to release Arik Armstead after discussions to lower the defensive lineman's salary fell through.
