Wright is a three-year pro who has started 19 games for the Lions. He has 43 career catches, 424 yards, and seven touchdowns. He would be an upgrade over Charlie Woener, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons, in the passing game, for certain. But Wright is also a good blocker, though perhaps not as effective as Woerner. And with Wright on board, the 49ers wouldn't have to rely on second-year tight ends Cam Latu or Brayden Willis, as they continue their development.
Reportedly, the Lions are high on Wright and have a lot of faith in him. If that's the case, it would stand to reason they would match the 49ers offer. But Matt Maiocco, of NBC Sports Bay Area, wrote, "The 49ers would not have executed this offer sheet for RFA TE Brock Wright if they felt the Lions were going to match. No team wants to negotiate a contract for another team. The deadline for Detroit to match is Wednesday, April 3."
If the Lions match the offer, nothing changes. Wright would stay in Detroit, and the 49ers would be no worse off. But if the Lions decide not to match San Francisco's offer, the 49ers would have their best number two tight end in years, and they wouldn't owe Detroit anything.
