Ward sustained a groin injury against the Seattle Seahawks on December 10, 2023. However, he managed to start the four regular-season games that followed and each of the 49ers' three playoff contests.
As the 49ers kick off organized team activities today, Ward joined Kay Adams on the "Up and Adams" show, offering an update on his recovery. Obviously, he won't be on the field with his teammates this week.
"I'm still rehabbing," Ward told Adams. "So I'm trying to get back up to running full speed and everything. ... But I feel good. I feel way better than it did a couple months ago. Even at the end last season, I was hurting pretty bad. My back, groin, abdomen was hurting pretty bad. But I fought through it, I pushed through it."
Ward is nearing full health and doesn't anticipate being sidelined for long.
"So I'm almost at 100 percent," Ward added. "I'll be ready for training camp, [for sure]."
Ward admits he was in pain down the stretch, including the week leading to the Super Bowl. However, adrenaline took over once the games kicked off, so it wasn't much of a factor.
He noted, "I was in pain, but I wasn't walking around like damn near handicapped. I was good enough to play."
Ward has played two seasons with the 49ers since joining the team in 2022. He finished last season with 72 tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a career-high five interceptions, and a touchdown, according to Sports Reference. The veteran corner earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors for his efforts in 2023.
