"Two years ago, we were ecstatic to welcome Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers," general manager John Lynch said via a statement once the team officially announced the signing. "Since his arrival, he's been everything we thought he would be and more. His versatile skillset has been a seamless fit within our offense. His professionalism and work ethic are as exemplary as I've seen since I've been associated with the NFL. We look forward to working with Christian for many years to come."
McCaffrey did not report to the 49ers for organized team activities (OTAs), but the team has a mandatory minicamp scheduled for this week. It kicks off today, and McCaffrey did report to the 49ers' facilities.
The Carolina Panthers made McCaffrey the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft following an impressive collegiate career at Stanford. McCaffrey quickly established himself as a dual-threat running back, capable of making significant contributions both on the ground and through the air.
In his rookie season, McCaffrey tallied 1,086 yards from scrimmage and 80 receptions, setting the stage for his breakout performance in 2018, where he amassed 1,098 rushing yards and 867 receiving yards.
In 2019, McCaffrey recorded a league-leading 2,392 all-purpose yards, surpassing 1,000 yards in both receiving and rushing, earning first-team All-Pro honors and solidifying his status as one of the league's premier offensive playmakers.
Injuries limited McCaffrey's production over the next two seasons, and the Panthers traded the running back to the 49ers in October 2022, providing him with a fresh start. Last season, McCaffrey surpassed 2,000 yards from scrimmage for the second time in his career, including an NFL-leading 1,459 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns. He was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
When asked if there is room for growth, McCaffrey's running back coach, Bobby Turner, responded, "Christian wants to get better every day. ... His standards are very high. And every day, we're looking for him to improve."
