According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers plan to sign safety Tracy Walker, who worked out for the team during Wednesday's practice. The move comes after the 49ers released safety Erik Harris. A corresponding roster move will need to be made when the Walker signing becomes official.
The Detroit Lions selected Walker (6-1, 206) out of Louisiana in the third round (No. 82 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. Last season, he recorded 59 tackles, one for a loss, three quarterback hits, two passes defensed, a sack, and a forced fumble in 17 games (six starts) with the Lions, per Pro Football Reference.
Walker, 29, has registered 398 tackles, 16 for a loss, seven quarterback hits, three interceptions, 23 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and four sacks in his 79 games (43 starts) over six NFL seasons.
All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to be eased into practice soon. The 49ers will evaluate his status next week when they travel to Southern California for joint practices with the New Orleans Saints. Hufanga is attempting to return from the ACL injury he sustained on November 19, 2023.
