San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery on Saturday. He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital after the incident.

"He sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition," the 49ers said in a statement.

The player's mother, Erin Pearsall, provided an update on her son.

"Update on my baby boy," Erin wrote on Facebook. "First and far most I want to thank GOD for protecting my baby boy. He is extremely lucky, GOD shielded him. He was shot in the chest and it exited out his back. Thanks be to GOD it missed his vital organs. He is in good spirits right now. Life is so precious my friends. Please love eachother. My son was spared today by the grace of GOD. Please pray for my baby."

Pearsall and the suspect, who was also shot during the altercation, remain in the hospital. General manager John Lynch and some 49ers staff were at the hospital on Saturday night to support the first-year player.

San Francisco selected Pearsall as the No. 31 overall pick in April's draft.
