This week, Shanahan informed Allen that he would be Purdy's backup for Week 1 when the 49ers host the New York Jets. Like many 49ers fans, Dobbs was surprised by the decision, feeling he had done enough to win the job.
"I feel like I did," Dobbs told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I feel like I played well in practice and in games when I had the opportunities. I think my film shows that. It's up to the coaches. And that's the decision they made."
Ultimately, the decision came down to familiarity with Shanahan's system. While Dobbs joined the 49ers this offseason, Allen was with the team last season, likely giving him the edge.
That doesn't mean the situation is set in stone. As Dobbs continues to study the offense and grows more comfortable within the system, he may be able to claim the backup role down the road. His mobility, which he showcased repeatedly during the preseason, adds another dimension to his game.
"I know how it goes week to week," Dobbs said. "Things can change and stuff like that. Just keeping myself (ready). Keep playing my game and stay ready for my opportunities. Even if you don't agree with it, you still have to go out and be ready to play."
Dobbs added, "I felt comfortable when I've had an opportunity to get out there, execute and run the offense. I've felt comfortable every time I've stepped in there. I've gone out and executed, as well. That's all I can control."
