"I'm not sure what doctor it is," Shanahan said during a Monday conference call. "I know he's going to see a specialist that I believe can help him with his Achilles process. I think he's doing that over these next few days, and hopefully, it'll help."
McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve on September 14, meaning he's ineligible to play until the Week 6 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. However, his trip overseas has raised concerns about the severity of his injury, with some speculating that the star running back may not be ready to return once his practice window is eligible to reopen.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shanahan acknowledged he hadn't yet received an update from McCaffrey and hadn't spoken with him since the trip. The coach was asked if there's a chance McCaffrey could miss the entire season due to the Achilles tendinitis.
"Not that I know of," Shanahan responded, almost surprised by the question.
While his answer may not inspire complete confidence, it does suggest the team has yet to consider shutting McCaffrey down for the season, and they still expect him to contribute.
In the meantime, Jordan Mason will continue to carry the load for the 49ers. The running back has rushed for 324 yards and two touchdowns through the first three games of the season, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
San Francisco, now 1-2 after back-to-back losses, will look to rebound this Sunday against the New England Patriots.
