Speculation surrounding head coach Kyle Shanahan's future with the San Francisco 49ers has intensified during a disappointing 5-7 season. A year that began with Super Bowl aspirations now appears destined to end without a playoff berth, sparking questions about whether Shanahan—and even general manager John Lynch—should feel secure in their roles.

Despite the chatter, ESPN's Adam Schefter believes the 49ers' leadership will get another chance to turn things around.

"If they wanted to move on from John Lynch or Kyle Shanahan, which I've gotten zero indication that they want to do, how quickly do you think it would be before there would be another team that would want to hire both of them?" Schefter said this week on the Pat McAfee Show.

While Schefter remains confident, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio has entertained a more dramatic possibility—one that could intrigue Chicago Bears fans. Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Florio floated the idea of the Bears exploring a trade for Shanahan or Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

"I feel like Shanahan and the 49ers are getting close to the point where they would benefit mutually from a fresh start," Florio said Tuesday morning on the Rich Eisen Show. "If you can get Shanahan and join him at the hip with [QB] Caleb Williams, are you kidding me?"

Florio acknowledged that head coach trades are rare in the NFL but argued they could be beneficial in certain situations. While he stopped short of suggesting that Shanahan or the 49ers are actively seeking a split, he speculated that circumstances might eventually warrant such a move.

"It's been since 2017," Florio commented, referencing Shanahan's tenure with the 49ers. "They've kind of been annually banging their head against the door, trying to break it down. This year just feels kind of weird. It feels like it's coming to an end from the standpoint of the nucleus of players that they've had there. And you never know what's really going on behind the scenes.

"And I mentioned the 49ers in part because it was 10 years ago or so when they had Jim Harbaugh going into what was the fourth year of his tenure there. The first three years had all been very successful. NFC Championship, Super Bowl (appearance), and NFC Championship. And we reported at the time, and it was accurate, and it was confirmed by the Browns in a roundabout way, that the 49ers were close to trading Jim Harbaugh to the Cleveland Browns.

"So, you never know, at the top of the organization, whether or not there's a sense that maybe it's time for a change."

Florio likened Shanahan's situation to that of Andy Reid, who revitalized his coaching career after leaving the Philadelphia Eagles and joining the Kansas City Chiefs.

"But after the 49ers lost to the Chiefs, one of the first things I thought is, at some point, I feel like Kyle Shanahan needs an Andy Reid reset, where I've exhausted every opportunity with the team that I started my coaching career with," Florio noted. "It's time to go to a new place."

Florio emphasized that he has no concrete evidence of friction between Shanahan and the 49ers or interest in a trade. He is simply speculating on the possibility, noting that a phone call between the Bears and 49ers costs nothing.
