There's been plenty of debate about which position the San Francisco 49ers should address with their first-round pick, No. 11 overall. After finishing the 2024 season with just six wins, the team has glaring needs on both the offensive and defensive lines. With 10 projected picks in this draft, it's a prime opportunity for head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to reload the roster with young talent.
Round 1: Protecting Brock Purdy
Cummings has the 49ers focusing on their offensive line in the first round, selecting Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou at No. 11 to help protect quarterback Brock Purdy.
"A dramatic riser of the 2024 college football campaign, Armand Membou has massive potential at both tackle and guard for the 49ers," Cummings wrote. "He's low to the ground, yet impossibly long. He's an elite athlete. He's unyielding with his physicality, and he's only trending up."
Round 2: Reinforcing the secondary
In the second round, Cummings projects the 49ers to bolster defensive coordinator Robert Saleh's secondary by selecting Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos with the 43rd overall pick.
"A breakout star of the 2024 season, Trey Amos is phase-versatile, athletic, physical, and a tailor-made fit for a 49ers defense that rewards those qualities," Cummings wrote.
Round 3: Edge rusher and tight end
The 49ers finally address their pass-rushing needs in the third round, selecting LSU defensive end Bradyn Swinson at No. 75 overall.
"If he can reach his ultimate ceiling, few edge rushers match Bradyn Swinson's potential with his burst, bend, length, and frame density," Cummings explained.
Later in the third round, with the 99th pick, Cummings has the 49ers adding to their tight end group by selecting Oregon's Terrance Ferguson.
"A well-rounded TE2 behind George Kittle, Terrance Ferguson gives the 49ers a capable receiver and blocker in the rotation," Cummings noted.
Rounds 4-7: Building depth
Cummings has the 49ers continuing to fortify the offensive line on Day 3 of the draft, using two more picks on offensive linemen. He also projects the team to add depth at linebacker, wide receiver, and defensive tackle while selecting a quarterback from Florida in the seventh round.
Here's a rundown of Cummings' projected picks for the 49ers from rounds four through seven:
- Round 4, Pick 112: Demetrius Knight II, LB, South Carolina
- Round 4, Pick 138: Clay Webb, OL, Jacksonville State
- Round 4, Pick 139: Kobe Hudson, WR, UCF
- Round 6, Pick 189: Jack Nelson, OT, Wisconsin
- Round 7, Pick 228: Thor Griffith, DT, Louisville
- Round 7, Pick 255: Graham Mertz, QB, Florida
