Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports adds that the 49ers had been shopping Mason all week. NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport add that the 49ers will receive a 2026 sixth-round draft pick and will swap late-round picks with the Vikings this year (Nos. 160 and 187).
Earlier in the week, San Francisco placed a second-round tender on Mason, which would have guaranteed him a $5.35 million salary in 2025.
The 49ers signed Mason (5-11, 223) as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech in 2022. The physical running back quickly earned a role in the 49ers' backfield.
San Francisco leaned on Mason in 2024 after Christian McCaffrey missed the start of the season due to Achilles tendinitis. Mason carried the ball 153 times for 789 yards and three rushing touchdowns across 12 games (six starts), per Pro Football Reference. He also contributed in the passing game, recording 11 receptions for 91 yards.
Mason's season was cut short after he suffered a high-ankle sprain during a Week 13 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, landing him on injured reserve on December 7.
Mason, 25, has totaled 1,253 rushing yards on 236 carries, with seven rushing touchdowns, averaging an impressive 5.3 yards per carry in 45 game appearances (six starts) over three NFL seasons. He has also added 14 receptions for 122 yards.
