"Sources indicate that the 49ers are open to trading Aiyuk — a terrific player who will certainly be motivated — and there has been communication with several teams," Schultz reported.
However, any potential deal could be complicated. Aiyuk is due a $22.85 million option bonus on April 1, creating a possible deadline if San Francisco intends to move him. Additionally, he is recovering from ACL and MCL injuries, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2025 season and lowering his trade value.
"It would be a pretty big surprise for me [if he's traded]," an NFL personnel director told Schultz.
The New England Patriots were previously considered a potential trade partner for Aiyuk. However, they instead signed Stefon Diggs, who is also recovering from an ACL injury, to a three-year deal.
Meanwhile, recent rumors suggest the Cleveland Browns are also interested and have maintained consistent contact with the 49ers regarding Aiyuk.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini also reported that San Francisco has been fielding trade inquiries for Aiyuk. However, she remains skeptical that a deal will materialize.
"I don't get the sense that it's a reality," Russini said. "I'm sure the 49ers would like to do it because of the finances. ... I don't expect anything [to happen]."
Aiyuk struggled last season after signing a massive contract extension with the 49ers. He managed just 25 receptions for 374 yards and failed to record a touchdown in the seven games before his injury.
When asked in February about rumors of teams inquiring about Aiyuk, general manager John Lynch responded, "You get calls, and you always listen to calls."
