As a result, the 49ers are expected to target reinforcements at both linebacker and along the defensive front in the 2025 NFL Draft. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin believes he's identified a prospect who can help at both spots. In his latest mock draft, Benjamin projects the 49ers to select Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker with the 11th overall pick.
"San Francisco endured plenty of cost-cutting subtractions this offseason," Benjamin noted. "Walker could help offset the defensive exodus, offering tone-setting power that could replace Dre Greenlaw at linebacker and/or aid Nick Bosa off the edge."
In 2024, Walker recorded 60 tackles (11 for a loss), 6.5 sacks, and two passes defensed over 14 games, per Sports Reference. He also earned the prestigious Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. Over three seasons at Georgia, Walker totaled 89 tackles (19 for a loss), 12.5 sacks, three passes defensed, and one forced fumble.
Walker received an 83.6 pass-rushing grade from Pro Football Focus in 2024, following a career-best 85.4 mark the year prior. While he posted a personal-best 73.1 overall defensive grade last season, his 62.3 run-defense grade indicates room for growth.
Many expect San Francisco to prioritize the trenches in the draft, and selecting Walker could address multiple needs—offering key depth and versatility while helping to fill the void left by Greenlaw, who signed with the Denver Broncos.
