NFL Network's Rebecca Haarlow is reporting that free-agent quarterback Alex Smith has left Miami where he met with the Dolphins and is headed back to San Francisco.

She said that team sources had informed her that they are confident in their communication with Smith.

Word is that the deal that the 49ers' offered him two weeks ago, a 3-year, $24 million deal with $10 million guaranteed, is still on the table. Earlier this afternoon, it was reported by Peter King of Sports Illustrated that Smith's agent, Tom Condon, had spoken with the Miami Dolphins today. Miami was rumored to be interested in offering Smith a multi-year deal worth about $8 million a year.

Smith has obviously become top priority for the 49ers with Peyton Manning deciding to go to the Denver Broncos. It is important to note that the fact that he left Miami without a contract does not necessarily guarantee that he will return to the 49ers. Last night, Mario Manningham signed with the 49ers after leaving San Francisco to visit with the St. Louis Rams, which he did on Saturday.
