Coach Nolan has been saying all offseason that the team would target a veteran quarterback to back up and mentor Alex Smith.
Dilfer is a 13-year veteran from Fresno State who has started 107 games and won a Super Bowl during the 2000 season with the Baltimore Ravens. He has 106 career touchdowns and has passed for 19,352 career yards. His best quarterback rating (where he started more than 4 games) came in 1997 with the Tampa bay Buccaneers. He had an 82.8 rating that year and started all 16 games.
Dilfer has played for the Buccaneers, Ravens, Seahawks and Browns over his career.
“Trent was a player we had interest in last season,” Head Coach Mike Nolan said. “We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers.”
According to ESPN.com, the undisclosed draft pick that was traded along with Dorsey was a seventh round draft pick.
