Team could keep four quarterbacks on the roster

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said the team could decide to keep four quarterbacks on the roster if QB Cody Pickett helps in a number of different areas. QB Jesse Palmer would be the No. 4 quarterback.

V. Davis and E. Johnson expected on the field together this season

Matt Maiocco also reports that San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis is expected to be on the field with TE Eric Johnson a lot during the 2006 season.

Pickett working as No. 2 quarterback

Matt Maiocco also reports that San Francisco 49ers QB Cody Pickett is working as the No. 2 quarterback during OTAs until QB Trent Dilfer (knee) is able to participate in practice.

Pickett could see action at wide receiver

Chrissy Mauck, of SF49ers.com, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan mentioned that QB Cody Pickett may also work some eventually at wide receiver once backup QB Trent Dilfer's (knee) knee reaches 100 percent.

Gore out of team drills until training camp

Chrissy Mauck, of SF49ers.com, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore (shoulders) will remain out of team drills until training camp. He is recovering from surgery on both shoulders.

Barlow still limited

Chrissy Mauck, of SF49ers.com, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Kevan Barlow (knee) is working more in the OTAs than minicamp although he's still being held out some by design. "It feels good and I was excited to be out there with my teammates," said Barlow. "I want to help us try to win and get that camaraderie going. We've got a new offense and so I'm trying to learn that with everyone and things are coming along."

E. Johnson practicing

Chrissy Mauck, of SF49ers.com, reports San Francisco 49ers TE Eric Johnson (foot) has been cleared to practice in team drills and he's doing well. Johnson has impressed head coach Mike Nolan already by delivering on his season-ending promise. "He's done what he said so far and that's important," said Nolan. "He came in after the last game as we were closing shop and spoke with all of the people he thought were important to let us know what his commitment was going to be in the offseason. I believe he's been about 100% for his participation in the offseason program."

Team conducts high-spirited practice

Chrissy Mauck, of SF49ers.com, reports the San Francisco 49ers twelve days of OTAs continued Wednesday, May 31, with a mid-morning practice, and as well as offering his usual instructional tips, head coach Mike Nolan also had to break up a few heated exchanges. The short-lived skirmishes occurred between OL Ben Sobieski and DL Marques Douglas and rookie TE Vernon Davis and LB Brandon Moore, signs Nolan said of a competitive team. "It was a good spirited practice today," said Nolan. "There was a lot of passion and spirit from the guys and they got in each other's face a little bit. When guys are competing, that's what happens. It's part of the process when you are competing and trying to get better. There is a sense of urgency among our team."
