49ers head coach Mike Nolan conceded that the acquisition of WR Taylor Jacobs from the Washington Redskins didn't solve the 49ers' problems at receiver, where they are short on bodies. "We'll see what Taylor brings to us," Nolan said. "I don't want to count anyone on the roster until they show they can do it." Nolan was equally unsure of the traits Taylor possesses. "I wouldn't say that everyone says he's a speed guy and I wouldn't say that everyone says he's a possession guy," Nolan said. "I believe he's kind of in the middle of the two. He's been a fairly decent special-teams performer, so he's a good football player. I'm kind of anxious to see how he fits in with the group we have. Until I meet him and see him on the field, I'm not sure exactly what his strengths are."
Nolan said the Washington Redskins approached the 49ers about a trade for CB Mike Rumph. "This certainly is no reflection of what happened the other night. The Washington Redskins called us and asked about his services. We did not initiate the conversations, so it kind of came out of the blue," said Nolan.
Injury Updates
Dylan Hernandez, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Maurice Hicks' (abdominal strain) MRI came back negative. Head coach Mike Nolan said Hicks will participate in limited practice and could be held out of the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 20.
OL Adam Snyder's (biceps) MRI came back negative. He suffered a strained biceps Friday, Aug. 11, and aggravated the injury in practice two days later. Head coach Mike Nolan said Snyder will participate in limited practice and could be held out of the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 20. Snyder will wear a sleeve on his arm.
RB Kevan Barlow (shoulder, thigh) returned to practice in a limited capacity Monday, Aug. 14. Barlow suffered bruises in his right thigh and right shoulder Friday, Aug. 11, when he was hit by Chicago Bears CB Nathan Vasher. "I'm still gimpy," said Barlow, who is unsure if he'll face the Oakland Raiders Sunday, Aug. 20. "It's more the thigh. I think I could deal with the pain in the shoulder if I get the thigh right."
WR Arnaz Battle (knee) sat out another practice Monday, Aug. 14, but said his absence wasn't because of a setback with his troubled right knee. He has been taking hyalgan injections on Saturdays that force him to rest for a couple of days. "They've helped me out tremendously," Battle said of the injections. 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said Battle has not lost his place as a starter.
CB B.J. Tucker (ankle) was unable to practice Monday, Aug. 14. Head coach Mike Nolan said the team will have to wait and see with Tucker's injury.
CB Derrick Johnson (toe) was unable to practice Monday, Aug. 14.
LB T.J. Slaughter (concussion) was unable to practice Monday, Aug. 14. He is expected to be back at practice Tuesday, Aug. 15.
PK Joe Nedney (ankle) was able to practice Monday, Aug. 14.
RB Maurice Hicks (abdominal strain) did not practice Monday, Aug. 14. He is having an MRI done on his abdomen.
OL Adam Snyder (bicep) went to get an MRI on his injured bicep. Head coach Mike Nolan said he's hoping it is nothing more than a strain.
49ers sign Benoit
The 49ers have signed free agent LB Sarth Benoit (Lions) to an undisclosed contract.
Team to wear throwback uniforms twice in 2006
The 49ers will wear throwback jerseys for two home games this season, against the Minnesota Vikings Nov. 5 and against the Arizona Cardinals Dec. 24.
