The San Francisco 49ers had originally planned to hold their August 9 practice at Levi's Stadium in front of 20,000 fans, who each entered to win free tickets to the event. However, due to the poor field condition, that practice has been moved to the team's practice facility next door.
The stadium field has been the subject of much criticism. The sod has come loose each time the team has practiced on it. Luckily, there have been no serious injuries because of it.
The team does plan to install a new field following a Taylor Swift concert on August 15. Levi's Stadium hosts numerous events outside of NFL games including concerts, high school football, college football, soccer, wrestling, and more.
The 49ers host a preseason game at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, August 23 against the Dallas Cowboys.
The team made the following statement on their official website.
We extend our sincere apologies to those fans who were scheduled to attend Sunday's practice," said Jim Mercurio, vice president of stadium operations and general manager of Levi's Stadium. "After a thorough inspection earlier today, our grounds crew determined that the field would not be ready by Sunday. Therefore, the recommendation was made to relocate practice. We remain confident that our turf management program will provide a playing surface that meets the team's standards, as we enter the 2015 NFL season.
