The Cowboys are coming off of a 17-7 loss against the San Diego Chargers. The 49ers are coming off of a 23-10 loss against the Houston Texans.
Tonight's game will be the 49ers' first of the year at Levi's Stadium and the second week in a row that the team has faced an opponent from Texas.
The stadium field has been the subject of much criticism recently, with the sod coming loose in recent weeks and potentially being dangerous for players. The 49ers stopped holding training camp practices at the stadium after issues with the field. While the sod was replaced last weekend, the Cowboys have shown some concerns about the stability of the field and said that it would be inspected by their team prior to today's game.
For some players, like RB Jarryd Hayne and DL Mike Purcell, this will be another opportunity to shine as brightly as they did against the Texans and move closer to securing roster spots. QB Blaine Gabbert will also be able to prove his worth following his unexpected 125.6 passer rating last week. It will also be the first time these two teams have met since last year's season opener in Dallas when the 49ers beat the Cowboys 28-17.
The game is also expected to be the first back for NaVorro Bowman at linebacker.
