Once again, let the rumors fly. With today's firing of Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego, 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary was one of the names dropped by ProFootballTalk.com as a possible replacement.

Singletary, who was briefly involved in the coaching rumors in Dallas, has openly expressed the desire to become an NFL head coach. Despite his inexperience, Singletary is highly regarded around the NFL.

Most sources seem to believe that USC's Pete Carroll is the leading candidate for the San Diego job.

49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner's name has been thrown out there as well. Turner just recently signed an extension to his contract in San Francisco. He served as the Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2001. However, most feel that Turner's hiring in San Diego would be a huge disappointment citing his success as an offensive coordinator and failures as a head coach.
